Equipment

  • 1 Ninja Food Processor
  • Measuring Spoons (various sizes)
  • Citrus Juicer
  • Airtight Storage Container

Ingredients

  • 1 540 ml can chickpeas, drained and rinsed (about 2 cups)
  • 1 ripe avocado peeled and pit removed
  • ¼ bunch fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 small jalapeño diced (optional, for spice)
  • 2 tablespoons tahini sesame paste
  • ½ tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves peeled
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 to 5 large ice cubes

Instructions

  • Prepare Ingredients for Blending: Gather and measure all your ingredients. Drain and rinse the chickpeas to remove excess salt and liquid. Peel and pit the avocado, and dice the jalapeño if you prefer a bit of heat. Place the chickpeas, avocado, cilantro, jalapeño, tahini, lime juice, salt, pepper, garlic, and olive oil into the bowl of your food processor.
  • Initial Blending for Creamy Base: Secure the lid and blend the ingredients on high speed for about 4 to 5 minutes. Pause occasionally to scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula to ensure everything is incorporated evenly. The mixture should become smooth but slightly thick at this stage.
  • Add Ice Cubes to Adjust Texture: Add the ice cubes to the food processor to lighten the hummus and give it a cool, creamy consistency. Blend again for another 4 to 5 minutes until the hummus is perfectly smooth and creamy. You can add more ice cubes if you want a thinner texture, blending after each addition.
  • Taste and Adjust Seasoning: Stop blending and taste your hummus. Adjust salt, pepper, or lime juice as desired to suit your flavor preference. Give it one last quick pulse to mix in any seasoning changes.
  • Serve or Store: Transfer your hummus to a serving bowl and drizzle with a little olive oil if desired. Serve immediately with fresh veggies, pita chips, or use as a spread. Alternatively, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.

Notes

  • Spice Level: If you prefer a milder hummus, omit the jalapeño or remove the seeds before dicing. For extra heat, add more jalapeño or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Cilantro Alternative: If cilantro isn’t your favorite, try fresh parsley or basil for a different fresh herb twist.
  • Tahini Substitute: If you don’t have tahini, you can substitute with almond butter or peanut butter for a nutty flavor, though it will change the traditional taste slightly.
  • Storage Tips: Store leftover hummus in an airtight container and cover the surface with a thin layer of olive oil to prevent oxidation and maintain the fresh green color.
  • Serving Suggestions: This hummus is delicious as a dip, spread on sandwiches or wraps, or dolloped on salads for added creaminess and flavor.
